Collegiate Nationals Race Report

May 15, 2007 - Judy Wexler - The Tufts team finished its 2007 road season during the second weekend of May, sending three riders to Collegiate Cycling Nationals in Lawrence, Kansas. Vince Chavanon, Judy Wexler, and Caitlin Thompson all participated in Saturday’s road race and in Sunday’s criterium. Unfortunately, neither the men’s team nor the women’s team had a full roster for A team time trials this semester, so we could only watch the TTT competitions on Friday.
Flooded sections of the Lake Perry road race diverted racers on Saturday to a 1.5 mile section of gravel road during each 28-mile loop. The hard packed surface took its toll, leading to numerous flats throughout the day. Caitlin and Judy were luckily spared this complication during the morning’s D2 race and ended up with 23rd and 24th place finishes, respectively, after 56 miles. Unfortunately, Vince was not quite so lucky in the afternoon. He did not flat but was the causality of a pile up halfway through the first lap of the men’s 85-mile race. Cracking the top tube of his frame, destroying his derailleur, and breaking a spoke, Vince was clearly out for the day.
Valiantly coming back for Sunday’s criterium on a Litespeed bicycle from Shimano neutral support, Vince rode in the pack to a 32nd place finish on an eight corner course that wound its way through the streets of downtown Lawrence. Earlier in the day, Judy and Caitlin had finished just out of the top twenty, with Judy sliding into 20th place and Caitlin cruising into 23rd in the D2 crit.
Tufts left the Mid-West sitting in the 24th spot out of 40 ranked Division II schools. Next year, the team looks forward to having Vince and Judy racing again in addition to the return on this year’s co-captain Katie Dunn. After breaking her neck in a training accident this past December, Kmonster is finally back on the bike. We’re also looking forward to recruiting some new sets of legs for our time trials!!!

ECCC Championships Race Report

May 1, 2007 - Judy Wexler - Tufts brought out a relatively small group of racers for the 2007 Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference championships in New Paltz, New York, but those who made it out to Vassar College’s Tour of the Hudson River Valley were in for a treat. The gently rolling time trial course on Saturday morning brought riders through idyllic farmlands while the afternoon’s road race course tested everyone’s legs with two brutal climbs in one 32-mile loop.
For team co-captain and senior Katie Dunn, it was a meaningful opportunity to race for the first time since her December accident and subsequent spinal fusion. Sitting in the front of the women’s A team time trial, she pulled out around teammates Caitlin Thompson and Judy Wexler in a celebratory outing which was also her third bicycle ride in four months. While the men’s A TTT did not has quite as much fun in their 10-mile race, the two C riders and one B racer who comprised the team after co-captain and A-rider Vince Chavanon broke his chain at the line were pleased with their 8th place finish.
Saturday afternoon, the Tufts team showed that all its racers need to head to the hills for some climbing practice. As seniors Jeremy Jo and Caitlin Thompson and junior Judy Wexler finished far behind the leaders of their respective races, Chavanon was among the 17 men’s A racers who did not finish the 98-mile epic journey. The strongest rider of the day seemed to be junior Colin Green, who unfortunately crashed out with 3 miles to go in his race leaving him with a finish 1 minute behind the lead.
Sunday morning, however, was a different story. Sophomore Glenn Ferreira outsprinted Yale’s Geoff Calkins for a win in the men’s C2 criterium, wrapping up a successful second season of collegiate racing. Chavanon pulled out a 16th place finish in his crit which saw 50 starters roll up to the line.
For most of the team the collegiate season has ended, but Vince Chavanon, Judy Wexler, and Caitlin Thompson are just now looking ahead to Collegiate Road Nationals. The three will compete in the D2 road race and criterium events on May 12 and May 13, respectively. Held in Lawrence, Kansas for the third consecutive year, this will be the second chance that Chavanon and Thompson are heading to the Midwest for Nationals while it is the first time Wexler will compete in this event.

Boston Beanpot Classic Weekend Update

April 2, 2007 - Judy Wexler - The organizational efforts of team members certainly paid off this past weekend in the form of the hugely successful Boston Beanpot Cycling Classic weekend. With crit director Kipp Callahan and overall weekend director Caitlin Thompson at the helm, Tufts helped to put on the second largest collegiate race in the country. On hand to witness the two days of dynamic racing was Director of Collegiate Cycling Daniel Matheny out from Colorado Springs.
Saturday saw riders competing in Grafton, Massachusetts in a morning team time trial put on by Boston University and following that, racing on Harvard’s challenging road course. Because so many Jumbos were busy coordinating the event, only two Tufts teams went out in the TTT. The men’s A team, headed by Vince Chavanon and filled in by B riders Steve McFarland and Jeremy Jo and C rider Glenn Ferreira used the opportunity to work together for the first time this season in a time trial. Riding into a second place finish in their earlier race were Noah Kaufman, Sam Caven, and Ben Mitchell in the men’s intro team.
The challenging Bringham Hill at mile eight of the road race’s 13-mile loop turned the later races of the day into brutal wars of attrition. Tufts Dental Resident Milos Janicek, in a surprise appearance, destroyed the Mens C2 field on a solo break away, powering through the 39-mile course after speeding off the front during the first lap. Specators were treated to the sight of Milos calmly pedaling past the start finish line on each subsequent lap, controlled and cruising to victory. Sophomore Mitchell had an admirable result in his first ever road race, coming in fourth in the men’s intro category. He seems to be quickly getting the swing of things in bike racing, as he came in third during the crit on the following day.
The Tufts criterium on Sunday showcased more than the team’s new kits to the Medford/Somerville campus. Undergraduates strolling down Professor’s Row got the chance to see the cycling club’s diligence, tenacity, and sexy shaved legs. Jeremy Jo pulled out a fabulous fourth place finish in his first ever category B crit. By racing so well, Jeremy proved that he can comfortably establish himself in the upper category. Judy also hung in the lead pack of her race, rolling in ninth place across the finish line for her best finish in As this season. In what was probably the most exciting race of the day, sophomore Colin Green pulled out ahead with three laps to go in the men’s C2 race. Despite the best blocking efforts of teammate Glenn Ferreira, Green’s valiant efforts fell through as the race ended in a field sprint, with Ferreira powering into 6th place.
This past weekend set a high bench mark not only for the rest of the ECCC, but also for the other conferences across the country. With impeccable organization and enthusiasm, the organizers of the Boston Beanpot have proved once again just how great collegiate cycling can be. (Full Results by Velocity Results: TTT, RR, Crit)

Bucknell Weekend Update

March 26, 2007 - Judy Wexler - After the Columbia/Princeton ECCC race weekend was disappointingly cancelled due to a late winter storm on March 16, the Tufts team sent a small contingent of racers to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania for Bucknell’s first full race weekend. Caitlin Thompson and Judy Wexler worked together both days in the women’s A field, coming in 9th and 11th respectively in the 45-mile road race on Saturday. The rolling course through fields and farms offered sophomore racer Justin Birudavol the opportunity for his best finish yet this season (right after his category upgrade) as he cruised into 10th place out of a men’s D field of 57. Fellow sophomore Glenn Ferreira finished 12th in the men’s C field after 36 miles of racing. Almost at mid-season, the Jumbos are taking the next few days to prepare for their home race this coming weekend. After a week of spring break during which many team members logged some serious base miles, they are ready to race with a vengeance all the way to Easterns. March 12, 2007 - Judy Wexler - Tufts senior Jeremy Jo brought it home again for the Jumbos this weekend in Philadelphia, sweeping both the Men’s circuit race on Saturday and the Men’s C Div II critierium on Sunday.  The first victory saw Jeremy beating 61 competitors to the line in an exciting field sprint after 18 miles of riding.  Not far behind, in 13th place over all, was sophomore Glenn Ferreira. Sunday morning, all the riders enjoyed sunny and beautiful weather as they hammered out 8.5 miles along the Schuylkill River in a scenic time trial.  The second Men’s C squad ended up in 4th place overall as their teammates in the first squad had to abandon the race due to a flat tire. Rockin’ the old school Tufts kit, Tufts alumnus Mark Abramson helped two other Jumbos (and one Dartmouth rider) to 5th place in the alumni/composite team race.  Later in the day, sophomore and co-captain Vince Chavanon had one of his best finishes this season in the Men’s A criterium, coming in 32nd out of a fast field of 81 riders.  On the women’s side, senior Caitlin Thompson enjoyed and benefited from the new company of her teammate Judy Wexler in the A field.  Both riders finished in the pack for the circuit race and crit. Overall, the Tufts team pulled out an impressive standing, finishing in 18th place for the weekend out of a gargantuan collegiate field of 58 teams represented. Rutgers Weekend Update

Jeremy wins at rutgers.

March 5, 2007 - Judy Wexler -The Tufts cycling team got off to a fast and exciting start this weekend in Piscataway, New Jersey at the Rutgers ECCC Season Opener.  We brought 11 racers to the competition on both Saturday and Sunday: there was a Tufts woman represented in all three categories (Women’s A, Women’s B, and Women’s Intro to Racing), and the team had one Men’s A rider, four men in the C category, and three more men in the Intro division.
Highlights from Saturday included a win in the Division II Men’s C criterium pulled out by senior Jeremy Jo (above).  Earlier in the day, the team placed three C riders in the top third of the morning’s 2.8 mile individual time trial. Jeremy came in 15th, followed by sophomore Glenn Ferreira in 20th place and junior Colin Green in 32nd place in a huge field of 96 riders.

On Sunday, the racers of the ECCC were treated to some snow showers as they competed in a circuit race around the Livingston campus.  Junior Judy Wexler won the women’s B race, and shortly afterwards her teammate Caitlin Thompson pulled a in 12th place finish in the women’s A field.  Next week, the team is headed south again for the Philly Schuylkill Challenge, where we will face off with both the other teams from the ECCC as well as some visitors from our neighbors in the ACCC.
